OECD recommends making diesel and petrol cars more expensive to own and calls for the re-introduction of water charges

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has said that the Government should consider implementing a number of measures that make diesel and petrol cars more expensive to run.

In its latest environmental report, OECD has also recommended that the Government consider re-introducing water charges in order to improve infrastructure access the country.

The detailed report which looks at Ireland’s environmental performance, suggests that the Government introduce higher taxes for diesel and petrol vehicles.

It also states that fuel prices should be more aligned with diesel costing the same price as petrol.

The OECD say that introducing such measures would encourage motorists to switch to electric vehicles and therefore reduce the country’s carbon emissions.

Meanwhile the report which also looks at Ireland’s water infrastructure suggests that the Government reintroduce the much debated water charges.

In its review of Ireland’s water infrastructure, the OECD say the re-introduction of the charges would help invest in the country’s aging water supply lines.

It cited that although charges will be introduced for excessive consumption, there is a strong need for the charges given the level of investment required.
