Rocket attacks, riots and air strikes follow Israeli raid on Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem

Tensions are once again flaring in the Middle East after Palestinian militant group Hamas launched dozens of rockets into Israel from Gaza in retaliation for an Israeli police raid on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.

Israeli security forces stormed the Mosque in Jerusalem, which is adjacent to the Wailing Wall, the holiest site in Judaism, as worshippers prayed, firing stun grenades, tear gas and rubber-coated metal rounds to disperse the crowds.

The raids coming during Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, were sure to cause a violent backlash with riots also erupting in West Bank where Palestinian protestors clashed with Israeli troops.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to shelters in anticipation of more rocket attacks and hospitals have been alerted to likelihood of an influx of victims due to terrorist attacks.

The Israeli air force has also carried out a number of strikes in Gaza to halt the incoming missiles with at least 20 Palestinians reported killed so far.
