Opinion: The Late Late Show should be ashamed – now more than ever it should be entertaining not pure misery

Ok, we’re the first to put our hand up – The Liberal reports coronavirus cases, figures, and general news just as much as any other media outlet, but we’re not meant to be an entertainment show like the Late Late.

Last Friday’s Late Late Show was the height of depression with nothing entertaining whatsoever. After what can only be described as a condescending spiel from host Ryan Tubridy at the start of the show, viewers were given yet another outing of the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.

Make no mistake, Dr Holohan is a hero of a man. He has steered Ireland to the best of his ability and to be fair to him, he seems to have stepped up to the mark with ease.

However, no offence intended to the esteemed medic, but viewers are looking for something light and don’t want to see him on it over and over again. The press briefings are enough. They don’t need to go over everything that’s already happened, is happening and may or may not happen.

The Late Late Show should have more entertainment than ever during this very unusual but tough time.

It might sound like it, but not everyone has Netflix or the wide variety of Android or iPhone options. There ‘still’ are people around the country who look forward to the Late Late Show to bring a little lightheartedness into their lives on Friday nights.

Instead of that, they get lacklustre interviews full of coronavirus, including a band named ‘The Coronas’ along with rugby player Paul O’Connell, who many say should have been interviewed via Zoom with no need for him to be in the studio.

RTE make people pay an extortionate license fee, it’s about time they give people what they actually want to see.
