Opinion: The Luas drivers should be ashamed of themselves holding the capital to ransom

If like me, you’ve been working, walking, driving, living or even visiting Dublin over the past number of days, you’ll have seen the devastating effects the ludicrous Luas strike has had on our central city.

We’ve heard far too many sob stories from union leaders when in actuality there’s literally no substance behind their so-called plight.

The fact that these pensionable workers have practically held the capital to ransom this week is an utter disgrace and a depiction of the outrageous lack of ability from the government to not only broker a deal with them months ago, but to empower the union to facilitate such a standstill.

It’s not like they’re working for pittance either.

They expect a pay hike from €35,901 to €41,895 in their first year. A bonus increase from 6.5pc to 10pc. A free GP service and all of this after qualifying for the job only needing a driving licence – not even a leaving cert.

Many, many degree-granted workers start out with practically half that salary… and are more than happy in getting it too.

With the election this day next week, people need to take a long hard stare at who they believe will stop the likes of this happening again. One thing is for sure, the hard-hitting all-promising left wing parties with ludicrous financial answers to truly serious questions will not be getting my vote.
