Outrageous: Lord Nigel Lawson says he hopes that the Irish Republic realises its “mistake” and rejoins the UK

There was a rather strange request by one former UK government minister who wishes the Republic of Ireland re-emerge with the UK.

The man with the somewhat ridiculous proclamation Lord Nigel Lawson made the bizarre statement whilst speaking about the referendum on whether or not the UK should remain in the European Union. Lord Lawson, who served under Margret Thatcher’s government also said “it would be great” if the Irish free state realised it had “made a terrible mistake” in getting independence from Britain back in 1922.

The 83-year-old’s rather disrespectful and off-the-cuff remarks were made when he answered a question of what a British exit from the EU would mean for the UK and Ireland. In response, Lord Lawson said that the United Kingdom has a “special relationship with the Irish Republic, for obvious historical reasons, but also reasons of sentiment.”

Before he added: “I would be very happy if the Republic of Ireland – I don’t think it’s going to happen – were to say we made a mistake in getting independence in 1922, and come back within the United Kingdom. That would be great.”
