Bad news for parents – new research shows head lice are immune to standard treatments




September is almost upon us and the kids are heading back to school to meet up with their classmates to learn which is all very good, but there is one problem every parent faces on a yearly basis and that is of course the pesky problem of head lice.

Normally the rather irritating hair condition can soon send an entire household into treating their hair. Well now it seems that the whole situation is about to get worse as standard over the counter treatments are no longer effective.

According to two-year study by the Journal of Medical Entomology has revealed that lice are almost immune to treatment, as the chemicals used to fight them are not strong enough.

Meanwhile Kildare Nationalist, Andrew Hennessy of Hair Experts parents need to be more aware of how the condition is contracted: “What we don’t have in Ireland, and we desperately need, are policies in relation to this in schools, and then proper education.

So it’s kind of a two-stage process: It’s education about lice and how the spread properly – they don’t jump, they don’t hop or fly, so it’s head-to-head contact.”
