Population replacement? The global fertility rate is plummeting

According to a significant research, practically all countries would have smaller populations by the end of the century. The report also warned that tremendous societal transformation will be driven by baby booms in underdeveloped countries and busts in wealthy ones, reports RTE.

A multinational team of hundreds of academics published a study in The Lancet stating that the fertility rate in half of all countries is already too low to sustain their population expansion.

Utilising an enormous quantity of worldwide data on births, deaths, and factors influencing fertility, the researchers attempted to project the future of the global population.

Three quarters of all nations will have smaller populations by 2050, predicts a report by the US-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), reports RTE.

The experts predicted that 97% of nations and territories, or 198 out of 204, will have such situation by the end of the century.

According to the report, the only countries whose fertility rates are predicted to be higher than the replacement level of 2.1 births per female in 2100 are Samoa, Somalia, Tonga, Niger, Chad, and Tajikistan.

Fertility rates will rise in emerging nations throughout this century, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, while falling in wealthier, older countries, reports RTE.
