Pro-choice TDs quick to introduce bills but refuse to debate reality of abortion, says Pro Life Campaign

The Pro Life Campaign has said that Deputy Ruth Coppinger’s abortion bill which is being voted on in the Dáil today has “everything to do with generating publicity and nothing to do with genuine debate”. The Private Members’ Bill to repeal the 8th Amendment was introduced to the Dáil before the summer recess.

Commenting on today’s vote, Cora Sherlock of the Pro Life Campaign said:

“I would take Ruth Coppinger’s campaign more seriously if she was prepared to engage in meaningful discussion on the issue. Instead, all we see is a series of set pieces that have everything to do with generating publicity and nothing to do with genuine debate.

“It is becoming very predictable the way some TDs introduce abortion bills every other month for so for no reason other than to garner attention. But the same TDs show no interest in discussing the negative after effects of abortion on women or the fact that the abortion procedure itself ends the life of an unborn child.”

She continued:

“Ruth Coppinger knows if the 8th Amendment is repealed the new legal position would not be restrictive but would permit wide-ranging abortion. In England today, 90% of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. This amounts to an appalling attack on human dignity and the right to life of the most vulnerable lives in our society. It’s time Ruth Coppinger and her colleagues were challenged on the horror that lies behind what she is proposing.”
