New figures released under a Dail question has shone light on how RTE is funded by the Irish community.

RTE took in €197,200,000 (€197.2m) in compulsory TV license fees for 2020

A whopping 9,555 court summons were issued for non payment of the TV license fees with 4,581 households being taken to court reports the Irish Mirror. 15.16% of licensable dwellings refuse to pay the TV license fees.

The TV license is compulsory in Ireland for anyone with a TV in their home or business.
The compulsory TV license fee is not optional even if household does not watch the government broadcaster.

Many who oppose RTE and or the TV license call the TV license fee the “RTE Tax” as there is no opt-out. The only way in Ireland to not legally pay your tv license is to remove your TV’s, aerials and satellite dishes from your home.
