UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson looks set to call for an early general election as rebel Conservative MP’s join the opposition Labour, Lib Dema and SNP parties in a bid to sabotage Brexit.

However, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn is rumoured to be intent on opposing an early general election as polls consistently show the Labour party lagging significantly behind the Conservatives.

These rumours are in contrast to Mr Corbyn’s public statements that the UK needs a general election and that he is eager to lead the Labour party into the polls.

Corbyn himself is a lifelong, die hard Eurosceptic, even campaigning in Ireland against Lisbon Treaty in 2009.

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has warned Corbyn that calling an early election is a trap planned by Boris Johnson to strengthen his hand with his own MP’s after winning an election and thus gaining the support needed to force a no-deal split with the EU.

Under the Fixed Term Parliament Act, the prime minister could call a general election if two-thirds of MPs vote for one.

It has been rumoured that by rejecting an early general election while MP’s vote to block a no-deal Brexit, the only option left for resolve the issue will be a second referendum.
