Rural TDs Group Criticizes Leaked Government Abortion Report for Disregarding Pro-Life Input

Radical Report Recommends Extensive Changes to Abortion Laws, Confirming Pro-Life Concerns of a Slippery Slope Towards Wider Access to Abortion Services, according to the Rural Independent Group of TDs.

Responding to the recently leaked government report, Mattie McGrath, the leader of the Rural TDs group, expressed grave concerns about the direction of the government’s abortion policy. He stated:

“In the 2018 referendum, the government and pro-choice groups assured the Irish people that abortions would be exceedingly rare. However, it is now apparent that this was a blatant lie as in the four years since, over 28,000 babies were aborted, resulting in less humanity and less hope. It is extraordinary that this comes from a government that places more priority on protecting biodiversity than unborn children.”

“This report resembles the slippery slope that I and my colleagues warned about in the Dáil and during the referendum. All promises made during the referendum have been broken, and the slippery slope, which was dismissed out of hand, has only become more treacherous.”

“We are highly critical of this report, as it is neither independent, objective, nor impartial and is written with one objective in mind: to make abortions more readily available. It is worth highlighting that the report recommends axing the current three-day waiting period for access to termination medication, which we consider to be a crucial safeguard for women’s health and well-being.”

“We are calling upon the government to prioritize the protection of women and unborn children by maintaining the current three-day waiting period and rejecting such a recommendation. Removing this reflection period would only increase the likelihood of women making a decision that they may later regret.”

“The report also calls for changes to the laws surrounding termination in cases of fatal foetal abnormality. Currently, women can only access abortion outside of 12 weeks’ gestation if two medical practitioners form a reasonable opinion that the foetus will likely die before or within 28 days of birth. However, the report recommends that if one doctor has formed an opinion in good faith that a pregnancy would result in a fatal foetal abnormality, they can recommend a termination. This change is deeply concerning as every human life is precious, and the government should prioritize the provision of support services that assist women during pregnancy rather than promoting abortion as a solution.”

“We call on the government to consider the serious implications of the recommendations in the report and prioritize the protection of women and unborn children in any future legislation. As unwavering proponents of safeguarding human life from conception until natural death, my colleagues and I in the Rural Independent Group are steadfast in our commitment to denounce any measures that jeopardize the lives of the most defenceless. We shall vehemently contest the government and refuse to permit them to conceal themselves behind the recommendations of this report, which are steeped in the blood of the innocent,” Deputy McGrath concluded with conviction.
