Safety appeal to motorists ahead of Saint Patrick’s bank holiday weekend

Prior to the Saint Patrick’s Day bank holiday weekend, drivers are asked to make advance plans and arrange a safe route home, reports RTE.

According to the most recent statistics, there have been 42 road deaths this year, three higher than at this time last year.

According to research, 10% of respondents said they have driven after consuming alcohol in the previous 12 months.

Approximately 26% of drivers stated that they think it is okay to drive a short distance after drinking, reports RTE.

After a night out, nearly one in four drivers acknowledged that they could have been driving while intoxicated.

If you want to socialise this weekend, Liz O’Donnell, Chair of the RSA, advised people to leave their car and keys at home.

“It’s really important at bank holidays and festive times, that people just be aware of it, aware of the danger of being on the road. You can celebrate and you can enjoy St Patrick’s Day but just leave your keys at home. Leave your car at home and keep everybody safe this weekend,” she said, reports RTE.
