There are reports this morning that a 66-year-old pedestrian has been killed, and two gardai have been injured in an early morning incident on the N18, just outside Ardrahan, Galway.

It is understood a Garda car stopped at the side of the road, and two gardai exited the vehicle to talk to the man. As the group talked, a second vehicle crashed into the stationary patrol car. The pedestrian was killed, and the two gardai sustained injuries which are described as non-life threatening.

The driver of the oncoming car, a male in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and later released.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Gort Garda Station on 091-636400, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
