Nice Guys Don’t Finish Last: Recent study reveals Women Choose Altruism Over Looks when looking for a future partner

We have all heard of the expression “nice guys finish last.” Well that age old expression might just be a thing of the past as new study has found that men who are more concerned for the well-being of others in place of themselves may have a better chance with the opposite sex compared to men who are just good-looking.

According to the recent research women claimed men were significantly more attractive when they were shown footage of average looking men doing kind, generous or heroic acts, compared to men who were renowned for their physical attractiveness. The latest study conducted by scientists from the University of Worcester and the University of Sunderland, explored the possibility if Altruism (Showing good will to others) had any impact on how women choose a future partner. During the extensive study, leading researchers analyzed what happened when two desirable characteristics, physical attractiveness and altruism, were investigated together, and whether women preferred one quality over the other.

The study which consisted of 202 women, were shown pictures of 24 men of varying degrees of physical attractiveness, judged independently by the three study authors, along with descriptions of the men doing something heroic and kind like saving a child from a river or buying coffee for a homeless person. Other photos were accompanied with not so nice situations, such as the man refusing to help in either of the previous scenarios.

The results found that being selfless gave men a better chance with a woman if she was looking for something serious and a long term commitment. The above findings were supported by previous studies that showed altruism is a essential quality that women look for in a partner, because it means that a specific individual is more likely to be supportive to her needs and are more likely to be better fathers. However the recent study also found that selfish men were seen as more desirable among women who were only looking for a fling.
