The basic purpose of any government is to uphold its citizens’ rights and welfare, and as such, a family’s entitlement to a decent home should be the utmost priority.
Not so in Ireland, it seems, whose elected representatives appear to care not an iota for the increasing number of homeless people around the country, while at the same time voting themselves a pay rise.
A report published by the Dublin Simon Community hammers the shameful point of the horrific homelessness crisis here, saying that almost 60% of people living in emergency accommodation have been homeless for over two years.
The organisation also highlights that requests for mental health support services has shot up 70%.
Sam McGuinness, a spokesman for the organization, has said that : “90% of them (people living in emergency accommodation) are there more than six months, and we’re looking at 60% of those are there more than two years.
“So that’s extraordinary, and it’s putting great pressure eon the services, and also the people who are in those services.”
