Six Nations in real jeopardy as Ireland-Italy clash set to be cancelled over coronavirus fears

The Coronavirus could claim a high-profile victim as Ireland’s Six Nations clash with Italy could be cancelled as the Department of Health warns there is a “significant risk” of the virus spreading to Ireland as thousands of Italians would descend on Dublin for the game.

The virus is currently spreading at an alarming rate in Italy with the government struggling to contain virus which first hit the in the economic capital of Milan in the north of the country but has since spread to the entire Italian peninsula.

The match is due to take place on March 7th.

Speaking to RTE News, Minister for Health Simon Harris said:
“We’ll be publishing guidelines in relation to mass gatherings shortly.
“We’ve obviously taken a decision in relation to the Ireland vs Italy rugby game, which was due to be held in Dublin on March 7th.
The very clear view of the Public Health Emergency Team was that this game should not go ahead; that it would constitute a significant risk because a very large number of people would be travelling from what is now an affected region. My department will be contacting the IRFU in relation to this.”
