St Patricks day Fail: Manchester United star Wayne Rooney gets ridiculed after posting a picture of the Ivory Coast flag instead of the Irish flag to celebrate St Patricks Day

There was some controversy on social media websites today when Manchester United star Wayne Rooney mistakenly posted a picture of the Ivory Coast flag instead of the Irish one in his St Patrick’s Day message.

The English striker, who is regularly trolled by soccer enthusiasts had a St Patricks day he will never forget as a number of people ridiculed him after his somewhat hilarious gaffe. The English born footballer who is of Irish descent, received the abuse after he published a picture of himself with former Manchester United team-mates Jonny Evans and John O’Shea – from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland respectively holding the Premier League trophy, with a message underneath stating: “#TBT (throwback Thursday) – Celebrating with my mates. Happy St Patrick’s Day” followed by three emojis – a ‘thumbs up’, a shamrock and an image of the Ivory Coast flag.

It was not long before Rooney was the victim of some hilarious jibes from fellow Instagram users, with many referencing Manchester City star Yaya Toure, who is from the Ivory Coast and calling today: “Yaya Day” instead. However the United star later changed his post to show the correct Irish flag emoji.
