Strong calls for the head of the commission reviewing Irish Water to step down this morning after he revealed he is in favour of the charges

The head of the Water Commission looking into Irish Water has been urged to step down after claims of bias towards the state utility.

The call comes after Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy accused Joe O’Toole of being in favour of the much hated charges. It is understood that Mr. O’Toole revealed in a recent interview that he paid his water charges and supports them, although he will approach the matter with an honest and open mind.

However Deputy Murphy believes that Mr O’Toole is not being objective and claims that Mr O’Toole has already decided that water charges should remain: “I think his position is now completely and utterly untenable.

“And I think now questions will be asked of can Fianna Fáil stand over this guy being chair of the Independent Water Commission considering their mandate is to oppose water charges. “Can the independent members of the government stand over it. And we’ll have to see how Fine Gael themselves respond in the Dail tomorrow.”
