Ireland’s fishing community have succeeded in their bid to have Russian naval military exercises moved away from the country’s fishing areas.
According to RTE, the Russian Embassy has indicated that a decision has been taken to relocate the exercises outside the Irish exclusive economic zone. Ambassador Yury Filatov specifically referred to the efforts of the Irish South and West Fish Producers’ Organisation, saying that Russia did not want to “hinder fishing activities by the Irish vessels in the traditional fishing areas.”
Social media users have been quick to commend those involved in fishing in Ireland for their calm and reasoned response to the situation.
