The Supreme Court has ruled that the bread used by sandwich franchise Subway contains too much sugar to be legally sold as bread.

According to Today FM, five judges of Ireland’s top court ruled that Subway would now have to pay tax on their bread, as it does not count as a ‘staple food’ which is exempt from VAT.

Subway’s bread sugar content is ten percent of the dough’s flour weight, far in excess of Ireland’s legal definition of bread.

It is unclear so far whether the new tax Subway will have to pay will be reflected in the prices of their popular sandwiches.
