The family who setup foundation to honour the memory of Ovarian cancer victim Emer Casey donate two mobile ultrasound scanners to St James Hospital Dublin

St James Hospital Dublin received a welcome donation this afternoon after the foundation setup by the family of young woman who died from Ovarian cancer, donated two mobile ultrasound scanning machines to help detect the early signs of the fatal illness.

The brand new scanners were given to the hospital’s outpatient gynaecology department by the Emer Casey Foundation, which was setup to honour the memory of Emer Casey who tragically died from ovarian cancer at the young age of 28.

The foundation say they donated the scanners in order to help others like her and to raise awareness of the illness. Emer’s family hope the machines will help doctors catch the fatal illness in other women early on so they can be treated as Ovarian cancer is the most fatal of gynaecological cancers, the disease is usually diagnosed late and 70% of women who are diagnosed die within five years.

According to new report from the National Cancer Registry in Ireland, around 360 new cases present each year and around 276 deaths occur due to the illness.

Meanwhile St James Hospital say the two much needed scanners have already improved patient flow in the Gynaecological Care Department.
