The new face of Ireland? Muslims celebrate Eid across Ireland and the world

Many Muslims around the world celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, including thousands of Muslims in Ireland.

It is a three-day celebration that takes place after the end of the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast on food and drink from sunrise to sunset.

Eid Al-Fitr means “The Festival of Breaking the Fast”. It sees the beginning of the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, Shawwal, and is the first of the two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims.

Islam follows a lunar calendar that is about 10 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, so Ramadan and Eid come about 10 days earlier each year.

The exact date is never known very far in advance as the crescent moon has to be sighted.

Many people on social media have commented that more and more Muslims will be prominent in Ireland as the years go on as they appear to be having more children that Christians.
