They can do a lot more: Harris talks tough about what USA can do about Gaza ceasefire

According to the Taoiseach, the US “can do more” to mediate a truce in Gaza, reports Breaking News.

Prior to visiting US President Joe Biden in the White House on Wednesday, Simon Harris made the remark.

The world has “failed the children of Gaza,” according to the Taoiseach.

“When the history is written in relation to this war, it has disproportionately been a war on children,” reports Breaking News.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he added: “We all understand the piercing cry of a child,” reports Breaking News.

“There’s too many people who’ve heard the cries of those children for too long and yet the war continues. There’s an absolute onus on everybody in a leadership position, including Ireland, to do more,” reports Breaking News.

Mr. Harris said he would inform the US president that efforts had not been successful thus far, even if he did not question Mr. Biden’s desire for a truce.

According to him, the US and other nations have to think about what more they can do, such as give weapons, to end hostilities.

“I think it’s up to every country, including the United States of America, to dig deep and see what more they do. Everybody needs to look at every lever at their disposal. That includes the supply of arms, of course it does,” reports Breaking News.

Mr Harris said it was up to individual countries to decide their foreign policy, but added: “No country in the world is doing enough to bring about a ceasefire and when people look back at this time in history, it will be a moment of shame for the world,” reports Breaking News.

Having previously stated that the pact’s human rights provisions were being broken, he restated that the EU should reassess its commercial deals with Israel.

The Taoiseach went on to say that the Attorney General will advise Coalition leaders of possible trade actions with Israel in light of the International Court of Justice’s decisions, reports Breaking News.

The top court of the UN ruled in July that Israel was not allowed to remain in the occupied Palestinian territory and that settlement development had to cease right now.

Additionally, Mr. Harris stated that every attempt should be taken to defuse the “extraordinarily dangerous” situation in southern Lebanon, reports Breaking News.
