Following the death of a man in County Down, Northern Ireland police have opened a murder investigation, reports RTE.

Just before two in the morning on Thursday morning, the victim, who is in his 50s, was discovered unconscious in a Newtownards home.

After being brought to the hospital, he passed away shortly after, reports RTE.

A 36-year-old male was detained at a nearby residence, while two women, ages 58 and 33, were taken into custody at the site in the town’s West Street neighbourhood.

On suspicion of murder, all three have been placed under arrest.

“Our investigation is at a very early stage and we are working to establish the full circumstances around this deplorable incident'” said Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly, reports RTE.

He added: “Cordons remain in place and local residents will see a visible police presence in the area. Of course, it’s particularly shocking that this should happen at Christmas and we know that the thoughts of our community will be with this man’s family and friends today,” reports RTE.
