Transport Minister says there will be no DART underground but the DART line will be extended to Balbriggan

The Government have confirmed that proposed plans to build a DART Underground has been put on hold due insufficient funding, however the Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe has said the current DART line will be extended to Balbriggan by 2022.

Mr Donohoe told the Dáil that he has repeatedly reviewed the case for implementing a DART Underground and recommended to Cabinet that the tunnel as currently designed is not necessarily needed at the present time as it does not meet current transport needs. The news will most likely be welcomed by the taxpayer a the new system would have cost in the region of €3bn.

However Mr Donohoe has said current plans to extend the DART to Balbriggan will be included in the forthcoming Capital Plan. If the proposal goes ahead it is expected that the project would be completed by 2022.
