Donald Trump stepped up the racially inflammatory rhetoric that is fuelling his historic attempt to reclaim the US president. He dubbed Democrat Kamala Harris “mentally impaired” and said that illegal immigrants are out to sever the throats of regular Americans in their own homes, reports RTE.
After Ms. Harris visited the US-Mexico border on Friday and pledged to take stronger action to manage asylum applications and unauthorised migrant crossings, Mr. Trump was attempting to retaliate.
Since she is running neck and neck with Mr. Trump in the election on November 5, this is one of the Democratic vice president’s weakest issues according to polls, reports RTE.
Swearing and accusing Ms. Harris and President Joe Biden of being behind the “invasion” of dangerous criminals, Mr. Trump disregarded Ms. Harris’s address at the border, telling supporters in the sleepy Wisconsin town of Prairie du Chien.
Since his election as president in 2016, Mr. Trump’s support in economically distressed, predominantly white areas of the nation has been based largely on anti-immigrant sentiment; but, as election day approaches, the language becomes more and more harsh, reports RTE.
The 78-year-old mogul called Ms. Harris, 59, a former California prosecutor, “dumb.” He is the only prominent presidential contender in US history to have been convicted of a felony and be the subject of several pending criminal proceedings.
“Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way. She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country,” he said, reports RTE.
However, Ms. Harris claimed that Mr. Trump was employing “the same tired playbook we’ve heard for years” while she was in San Francisco, California, yesterday for a fundraising event.
“This election is about two very different visions for our nation and we see that contrast on the campaign trail,” she stated, reports RTE.
Despite a sharp reduction in illegal border crossings this year and what the FBI claims is a sharp decline in overall crime, including murder, Mr. Trump painted a terrifying picture of an America under violent assault while speaking in Wisconsin, surrounded on stage by huge mugshots of migrants accused of crimes.
“They will walk into your kitchen, they’ll cut your throat,” Mr Trump said of illegal immigrants, reports RTE.
“Small towns in America are terrified of migrants coming in and, even when they haven’t arrived, they’re terrified,” he said. They will “rape, pillage, thieve, plunder and kill the people of the United States of America”, reports RTE.
