A wind turbine off Arklow in County Wicklow was struck by lightning and is on fire.

Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wicklow counties are under an orange status thunderstorm warning until 5pm, with Met Éireann warning of “intense” lightning.

An orange state rain warning is also in effect for Waterford, Wicklow and Wexford until midnight, with the forecaster warning of very heavy rain with thunderstorms embedded.

The turbine fire is expected to go out without the intervention of emergency services. Smoke can be seen from a turbine about 7 miles from Arklow due to lightning this afternoon.

However, it is understood that standard industry practice for an unmanned turbine is that a fire can be extinguished, a process likely to be aided by wet weather.

The turbine was reportedly struck by lightning shortly before 1 o’clock.
