After what a court called a “cowardly attack,” two brothers who pleaded guilty to assaulting two gardaí who were not on duty have been forced to pay additional compensation to their victims, reports Sunday World.
December 11, 2023, saw the charging of Fionn Duffy (19), of Crossan Road, Mayobridge, Newry, and Shea Duffy (18), of Loughanmore, Jenkinstown, Dundalk, on two charges of assault causing hurt at Park Street, Dundalk.
Shea Dufy was also accused of using or displaying words or actions that were derogatory, abusive, or threatening.
They did not charge the third individual who was with them at the time, reports Sunday World.
The two defendants were accused of not knowing the other males and of not having a clear memory of what happened since they had been drinking all day following a friend’s death.
The Duffys had offered €4,000 in compensation between them, but Judge Ciarán Liddy said the amount “isn’t going to cut it.”
In order to get the available victim impact statements, the case had been postponed, reports Sunday World.
The brothers also sent in letters of apologies and many character references.
According to the evidence presented, when one of the injured cops was escorting a fellow officer home following a night out, he noticed the second victim approaching them, trailed by three individuals, reports Sunday World.
