On Tuesday morning, hospitals in Ireland were treating over 629 patients, 24 of whom were children, in chairs, carts, and other unsuitable bed arrangements, reports Breaking News.

As a “pre-Christmas surge” begins, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has stated that addressing the current hospital overcrowding situation must be a top priority in government formation negotiations.

There were 49 admitted patients at University Hospital Galway, 77 at Cork University Hospital, and 99 at University Hospital Limerick who were awaiting beds.

INMO general secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “We are seeing yet another pre-Christmas surge in the number of people who are being admitted to hospitals without a bed. Dangerous levels of overcrowding are not just confined to a couple of sites, we are seeing high levels of patients on trolleys in most hospitals. This is an indicator of the difficult weeks that lay ahead for patients and nurses and midwives who want to provide safe care in our hospitals,” reports Breaking News.
