The Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has said that he is more than happy with the current rise in support for the Government in a latest opinion poll labeling the results as “encouraging”.

The latest poll shows that the Fine Gael party have gone up five points to 24%, while the Labour party have gone up 1 to 7% in the survey conducted by “The Irish Times”. The survey also reveals that the Sinn Féin party have gone up two points to 24%, although there were substantial losses for both Fianna Fáil and Independents.

However Mr Varadkar said he expects the polls to change yet again in the coming months. Mr Varadkar said: “I look at the opinion poll today as encouraging, in that it shows a rise in support for both Government parties, but the election is a year away and I think there’ll be many ups and downs between now and then,” he said. “The important thing now is to concentrate on governing the country well, continuing to increase employment, sustaining the recovery, and – hopefully – putting a bit of money back in people’s pockets.”
