There were heated exchanges in the Dáil as politicians debated a motion by the Independent Countryside Group which said Ireland should “stop those who come to take advantage of our generosity as asylum tourists,” reports RTE.
For the first time, concerns over excessive immigration to Ireland have been formally debated in the Dáil.
A group of six senators from the Independent Rural Group argues that there is “a chasm” between society and government in terms of “unsustainable” internal migration.
Their request, however, was rejected by some opposition members who argued that the party was trying to take advantage of the recent riots in Dublin.
The rural independent group consists of Matty McGrath, Michael Collins, Carol Nolan, Richard O’Donoghue and brothers Michael and Danny Healy-Rae.
“Ireland’s policy of voluntary return is being absurdly abused, and that’s a fact,” Ms Nolan asserted, reports RTE.
