Voting underway in Spain as the country goes to the polls for a second time in three years

About 37m people are being called to vote in Spain today, as the Mediterranean country goes to the polls for a second time in three years.

The outcome of the 2016 general election left Spain in the hands of a minority government led by Partido Popular, and supported by two smaller parties, Ciudadanos and Coalicion Canaria.

A number of issues, including the Catalan problem, divisions on Brexit, and popular revolt by pensioners demanding better conditions, precipitated today’s elections ahead of time.

About 14m people have cast their ballot as of Sunday afternoon. The outcome is far from clear, with most experts agreeing that a coalition Government is the most likely result.
