Welfare for all Ukrainians already living in Ireland may be seriously cut back, says Humphreys

The government may need to “down the road” cut welfare benefits for all Ukrainians residing in state housing, according to Minister of Social Protection Heather Humphreys, reports RTE.

The EU’s Temporary Directive expires in March 2025, and the government needs flexibility as it begins to plan for that, she said the Dáil.

The minister was speaking as the Dáil approved legislation that will lower welfare benefits for recent immigrants from Ukraine by a vote of 108 to 15, reports RTE.

The weekly payment for those coming here from Ukraine next month will be reduced from €232 to €38.80 under the legislation, which will now be brought before the Seanad.

Additionally, the modification will result in a 90-day guarantee of State-provided housing for new entrants.

The minister stated that the government has already ‘placed roofs over the heads’ of 75,000 Ukrainians and that this is about bringing Ireland into line with other EU nations, reports RTE.
