Poor families in Oakland, California will be refused monthly welfare payments if they happen to be white.
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announced race-based program to give non-white families $500 monthly checks to families earning less than $30,000 per annum but some have accused the Democrat politician of racism as the city’s poor white families will not be entitled to the checks.
The program involves a lottery system which will see the no-strings-attached checks go to households with an annual income of less than $59,000 if they have at least one child. The other half of the $500 checks will go to those earning under $30,000.
In a growing trend in the United States however, white people, 10,000 of whom live in poverty in Oakland, will be excluded from the lottery due to their race.
Some commentators have labelled the program “pure racism” with one asking:
“Is this even legal? Can a city government legally have a program that’s only for certain races?”
