Winnie Mandela, ex-wife of the late Nelson Mandela, has passed away aged 81.
She was imprisoned herself several times, for her part in the fight against apartheid, and her life often became mired in controversy due to alleged endorsement of violence and fraud convictions.
Mandela died peacefully after a long illness.
