According to testimony at an inquest, a young chef was fatally injured in a bizarre accident at his south Dublin house after falling down a staircase and hitting his head on a tumble drier, reports The Mirror.

At a Dublin District Coroner’s Court hearing, it was explained that in the early hours of October 8, 2022, Harry Russell, 26, and his girlfriend were living at a flat in Eaton Square, Monkstown, County Dublin, when he suffered severe damage to his upper spinal cord.

Originally from Somerset, England, Mr. Russell passed away five days after being taken by ambulance to St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, reports The Mirror.

Margot Bolster, the pathologist, said the hearing on Monday that the way the victim’s head made contact with the tumble dryer caused it to stretch rearward.

The collision broke the tumble dryer’s Perspex door, according to testimony given during the inquest. According to Dr. Bolster, Mr. Russell had no fractures and there was no indication of any more severe damage, reports The Mirror.

His spinal cord damage, according to the pathologist, would have prevented blood flow to the brain and caused the concomitant cardiac arrest. According to her, Mr. Russell wouldn’t have suffered since the way the incident happened would have knocked him out.

“The way he fell was very unfortunate,” she continued. Dr. Bolster said that although there were trace amounts of cocaine and alcohol in the victim’s body, she did not think they had anything to do with his demise, reports The Mirror.

Tina Starr, the mother of the deceased, who watched the inquiry by videolink, asked whether Ireland had any laws prohibiting impediments that would pose a fire risk from being placed in a public space.

“I lost a son because of that tumble dryer,” Ms. Starr said, fighting back tears. The identical spot had once been inhabited by a clothes horse, she said, reports The Mirror.

According to the inquiry, the tumble dryer was installed because a building occupant had complained about the clothes horse.

Ms. Starr cried, “Harry would still be alive today if it was the clothes horse.” “The past two years have been really difficult. This is so difficult to hear. She did concede, though, that it was “a freak accident,” reports The Mirror.

Ms. Starr reported that during his two years in Ireland, her son had been a happy and healthy young man. She said, “He was flying.”

Niamh Mahon, Mr. Russell’s girlfriend, said that her boyfriend, whom she had known for more than two years, had gone to work at the Milano restaurant in Dún Laoghaire yesterday at lunch, reports The Mirror.
