Govt say they’ll address scandalous taxpayer money waste on €124,000 scanner that doesn’t even fit in room of National Gallery

The Minister for Public Expenditure, Jack Chambers, has expressed his intention to address the issue of a €124,000 scanner bought by the National Gallery, which has sat idle for eight years since its purchase. Calling the situation “totally unsatisfactory,” he highlighted that this reflects a lack of respect for the responsible use of public funds.
Chambers revealed plans to tackle the problem through improved “central management and oversight.” Speaking on RTÉ’s Drivetime, he explained, “I’ve instructed my team to examine the public financial procedures and policy frameworks that guide spending across government departments.” He stressed the importance of evaluating how these rules are applied to strengthen control over spending, particularly within specific agencies.
The minister underscored that ensuring government bodies and State agencies stick to value-for-money principles is a priority. He announced a review of financial procedures to reinforce accountability in spending decisions. Chambers also acknowledged the widespread frustration and anger among taxpayers over instances of wasted public resources, signalling his determination to prevent such occurrences moving forward.
