Cork City aiming to become Ireland’s first cashless city by encouraging people to use electronic payment systems

Cork is aiming to become Ireland’s first cashless city.

The news comes after the Cork City Centre Forum have posted a message to encourage people to use a wide variety of electronic payment scheme which includes chip and pin, contactless or other electronic payment options. It is believed the group have introduced the scheme to make Cork one of the leading cities in Europe were they will be a cash-free society.

The move was welcomed by Businessman and publican, Paul Montgomery, who said: “This is a major step for Cork city in establishing us as Ireland’s ‘smartest’ city and a region that’s leading the way in the move towards such an innovative global trend. “Already Irish consumers make a contactless payment every second, two million each month and this is just the start.”

Mr Montgomery further explained that being a cash-free city would always be the customer’s choice, but explained a cash free city would be more beneficial for the consumer, saying: “For businesses, there is increased flexibility and efficient financial management as well as lower security costs. From a consumer perspective, transactions can be more reliable and secure.”
