First day of winter forecast to be sunny but cold, ahead of a freezing night with lows of -4C





The first day of winter 2018 is forecast to be bright and sunny but rather cold, with daytime temperatures reaching no more than 7-9C.

Thursday night is expected to be one for under the duvet, as temperatures are expected to sink to 3 or 4 below freezing.

The outlook is for an unsettled 48 hours as the tail end of Hurricane Oscar is likely to hit Ireland towards Friday evening.
