French President Emmanuel Macron in a tirade against U.S President Donald Trump has called the tariffs he has imposed on the EU trade “illegal” and said such measures “lead to war”.
President Trump is determined to protect American jobs and industry and to that end has moved to impose tariffs on importation of steel and aluminium, that could undermine the livelihoods of millions of American workers.
These measures were some of Trump’s key election promises.
Other senior EU leaders have also taken a similarly bellicose tone towards the U.S, the EU Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Maelstrom, has said “The US has sought to use the threat of trade restrictions as leverage to obtain concessions from the EU… the EU’s response will be proportionate”.
The governments of Mexico and Canada have also criticised the measures however, President Trump appears to be remain steadfast in upholding his promise to protect the American worker.
