Gardaí in Athlone have confirmed they have arrested three teenagers in connection with attacks on two elderly residents in the town.
Gardaí say the arrests come after two teens stabbed a taxi driver believed to be in his 70s in the early hours of Tuesday morning. It is understood the disgraceful attack occurred after the driver picked up the two males on Church Street in the town. Following the disgraceful attack, three youths armed with a firearm and an iron bar threatened and assaulted another man believed to be a shop keeper also in his 70s on the Ballymahon Road on Tuesday evening. Gardaí say thankfully both victims were released from hospital after receiving treatment.
Gardaí also say the three youths were arrested after follow-up operation which was conducted yesterday evening. It is understood that all three teens are currently being held at Athlone Garda station.
