Government faces hefty bill to repair secondary road network

The sorry state of many a secondary road in Ireland is evident. Crater-size potholes, bad design, lack of drainage, and faded road markings are just some of the issues affecting the network.

Today, new Minister for Transport Shane Ross has said that the repair bill for over 90,000km of secondary roads would come to about 5bn.

Secondary roads are expected to fall into further disrepair, due to a lack of upkeep.

Conor Faughnan of AA Roadwatch said that: “The main road network, which we do obviously have to maintain, is in reasonably good shape, it carries about half of all traffic.

“The other half is dispersed among 88,000 to 90,000kms of second and third-level roads, and no matter who is in power and no matter what your political views, that is a challenge.”
