The Minister for Health Simon Harris has confirmed that he and the Department of Health will draw up proposals’ that will see the current organ donation system overhauled.
Mr Harris confirmed that the draft for the new legislation which could be implemented by as early next year was formally approved by the Government on Tuesday.
Under the new system Irish citizens will automatically become donors although they will be given the option to opt out if they wish to do so.
It is understood that the new system is being implemented in an effort to cut the organ donor waiting list which will in turn save lives.
