Ibrahim Halawa, who has Irish nationality, will face trial in Egypt’s capital Cairo this morning.

Halawa is the son of Sheikh Hussein Halawa, the Imam of Ireland’s largest mosque. He was arrested in Cairo in 2013, along with his sisters Somaia and Fatima, and was initially charged with murder and terrorism offences along with hundreds of others.

Earlier court dates have passed without trial, but according to sources, a mass trial will take place in the city today.

His sister Omaima said earlier this week that “We just keep praying and hoping, we want him home with us where he belongs.

“We recently celebrated the muslim feast of Eid and I realised that it is nearly two years since all of us have been together as a family, someone always has to be in Egypt to be there for Ibrahim.”
