Investigation underway after 117 migrants drown in the Mediterranean sea

An investigation is being carried out by Italian authorities after up to 117 migrants drowned in the Mediterranean sea while trying to cross from Libya to Italy.

Flavio Di Giacomo, of the International Organisation for Migration, said three people were rescued by an Italian navy helicopter on Friday evening.

The three survivors said that there was 120 people on aboard when the boat left Libya, travelling towards Italy with one of them said to have been a 2-month-old baby.

The boat is said to have capsized some 10 hours into the journey.

A total of 116,959 migrants are said to have reached Europe by the sea over the past 18 months. It’s not yet known how the migrants left Libya as a clampdown on these journeys is reported underway.
