Lest we forget: An Taoiseach commemorates the Irish war veterans by defiantly wearing an Irish poppy in the Dail

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar took the wind out of a lot of people’s sails this week after he proudly donned an Irish poppy on his suit lapel.

The Irish poppy is, obviously, an Irish version of the British Legion’s poppy which commemorates the dead war veterans.

It used to only represent The Great War, but recently it covers all wars that English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and commonwealth countries participated in.

Varadkar is the first Fine Gael leader to take the step and it’s been welcomed by many whose ancestors fought in the Great War for a job and indeed the second world war to beat the Nazis.
