New Eurovision voting system means Ireland has a genuine chance at winning the contest again – here’s why it benefits us

Eurovision 2016 will be talked about for years to come.

Not only did it see Australia almost win the European song contest and be beaten at the last second by Ukraine, it gave us a new and fairer voting system that actually might give Ireland a chance in the future.

The voting was broken up into two categories, the jury vote and the public vote.

The jury vote was quite simply that – a panel from each participating country got to vote how they saw fit, then there’s the public vote.

The public vote is an amalgamation of all votes each song gets from every country.

For example, Ireland’s most voted for song could be the U.K. so they get 12 votes from us, and France’s total see them second, so they get 10 votes off them giving the U.K. a total of 22, and so on and so forth.

This means neighbour counties can only vote for each other at the jury stage and entrants can spring forward in the public vote, just like Poland did last night.

This new system means Ireland actually has a chance at winning the competition again!

We just need the right song…
