Over 14,500 driving convictions overturned after Garda error

The Gardai have issued an apology today after 14,500 people who were charged with road traffic offences had their convictions quashed because of a garda error.

The error which now has to go through an appeals process after those who were convicted were not issued a fixed-charge notice.

The error could now prove to be costly as the State have to cover all costs to those were wrongfully convicted, which is likely to be millions of euro.

Meanwhile the Gardai have also admitted that the number of drink driving tests carried out over the last six years has been greatly exaggerated with almost a million false tests being submitted in reports.

GardaĆ say they do not know what happened but accept that all false reports were made up and that they were part of a policy of failures.
