Political wrangling continues as talks between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil breakdown this evening

The political wrangling looks set to continue after it has been reported that talks between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have have broken down tonight.

The unexpected news comes after a planned meeting between the two parties was cancelled, and it is believed there are no further talks planned. The sudden breakdown in negotiations comes just before the Dáil is expected to vote for the next Taoiseach.

Sources within the Dáil say the schedule meeting between the two parties was cancelled at shortly before 8pm this evening. Early reports say Fianna Fáil cancelled the meeting because they were not ready to exchange a policy document this evening.

Meanwhile a source in Fine Gael has said they are extremely frustrated and disappointed over what they believe is Fianna Fáil’s unwillingness to engage on policy and that the party is unsure now how the process will proceed, as no further talks are scheduled.

The latest move also comes after Fine Gael recently passed a motion which reinstated their position on Irish Water.
