The open road: Saudi Arabia to pass new law that will finally allow women to drive in the country

There was good news for women living in Saudi Arabia this week as the country’s King Salman officially declared that women will be allowed to drive cars from next year onwards.

The move which will be most likely welcomed by feminist groups across the world, will officially put an end to the states outdated law which makes then the only country in the world that bans women from driving.

It is understood the royal decree which was submitted by the king will go before a specialist Government committee that will give advice before it is implement in June 2018.

According to state media SPA the kings declaration stipulated that the move must “apply and adhere to the necessary Sharia standards.”

Saudi Arabia has faced criticism in the past especially when it comes to the treatment of women in the country, it is thought this latest law combined with the public recruitment process for more women in the workplace will begin to rid the country of its bad image over its traditional laws that virtually forbids women from carrying out routine tasks.
